Little Bits of Romance

A few months ago, I quit smoking, which was hard and yes, good for my health and my pocketbook, but now I have to come here and confess one more addiction left. I love romantic movies, romantic comedies, and the sappier the better. I don’t think these movies should come with standard ratings but rather a tissue alert with the degree of severity it needs. For example, 27 Dresses with James Marsden and Katherine Heigl which would get a one on the tissue scale to The Notebook with James Garner and Gena Rowlands, which most definitely deserves a five or maybe that should be five boxes…

Anyway, I got to thinking that there is some great material inside these movies, just from some great quotes that should be heard over and over again to some lengthier sections that can be easily tweaked into some romantic and emotional vows. Unfortunately, I never write down the quotes that I really love, so I have scoured the internet for you and brought together a collection that has a bit of everything. In no particular order other than this is the order I found them in.

From The Notebook:
The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more; that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds…That’s what you’ve given me and that’s what I hope to give to you forever.

From The Runaway Bride:
I guarantee that we’ll have tough times and I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life cause I know in my heart that you’re the only one for me.
(Hint here for the guys: clean this up a bit and you have a romantic proposal for your bride to be.)

From Moulin Rouge:
Never know I could feel like this, like I’ve never seen the sky before. Want to vanish inside your kiss and I love you until the end of time.

From Captain Corelli’s Mandolin:
When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.

From A Knight’s Tale:
If I could ask God one think, it would be to stop the moon. Stop the moon and make this night and your beauty last forever.
(This one is so simple, and one of my top 10 favorites.)

From Shakespeare In Love:
I will have poetry in my life. And adventure. And love. Love above all. No…not the artful postures of love, not playful and poetical games of love for the amusement of an evening. But love that…overthrows life. Unbiddable, ungovernable, like a riot in the heart, and nothing to be done, come ruin or rapture.

From When Harry Met Sally:
I love that you get cold when its seventy degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend a day with you I can still smell your perfume on my clothes, and I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night.
(While this quote may not point out those things you love about your beloved, it is a great format for vows. Just take out what was said between the I love… and put in what has meaning to you.)

From 10 Things I Hate About You:
I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat books and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick–It even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh — Even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you’re not around. And the fact that you don’t call.
But mostly, I hate the way I don’t hate you — Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
(And OK, this one is childish, and it is from a teeny bopper movie, but illustrates well that the line between love and hate can be razor thin.)

From City of Angels:
I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it.

From Sleepless in Seattle:
Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were suppose to be together…and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home…only to no home I’d ever known…I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like…magic.

From Never Been Kissed:
I’ve kissed a guy…I’ve kissed guys. I just haven’t felt that thing…That thing…that moment when you kiss someone and everything around you becomes hazy, and the only thing in focus is you and this person. And you realize that that person is the only person you’re supposed to kiss for the rest of your life. And for one moment you get this amazing gift. And you wanna laugh and you wanna cry, ’cause you feel so lucky that you’ve found it, and so scared that it’ll go away all at the same time.

From Ghosts of Girlfriends Past:
Someone ones told me that the power in all relationships lies with whoever care less, and he was right. But power isn’t happiness, and I think maybe happiness comes from caring more about people rather than less…

From Meet Joe Black:
Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. If you don’t start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who’ll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I’m not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you’ll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love. Well, you haven’t lived a life at all. You have to try. Because if you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived.

From Before Sunrise:
If there’s any kind of magic in this world, it must be in the attempt of understanding someone, sharing something. I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed, but…who cares, really? the answer must be in the attempt.

And I know that there a  bunch more out there. I am sure there are probably even better ones from movies that I forgot about, or just haven’t had time to see yet. What are some of your favorites? Why do they speak to you? I would love to expand our collection here for all of us to use.
