Bridezilla, Bridezilla, fly away home?

Some of you may know, but most of you probably don’t, but Rev. Kelly had surgery just before the new year, so has had a lot of time with movies that she missed when they were released new and reruns of bad TV for the past couple of weeks. While watching those bad reruns, she caught one “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” (love Salem the cat lol) where Sabrina is planning her wedding and her attitude got her turned into a dragon.

This reminded us of that it is really easy to get caught up in the details of planning a wedding, the desire to have the perfect day, and forget what is really important. The most important thing about your wedding day, that should be held above all else, is that you are marrying your beloved, the one you want to be with for the rest of your life. The rest of your wedding day is just small details that if you learn to smile though it, your guests will smile through it and everyone will have a great time…and wonderful memories.

There is a reason that we have the cliche “you get more flies with honey that you do with vinegar.” While we have no idea what anyone wants to gather flies for (with the exception of fisherpeople), the idea is that if you are nice to people then they will be more willing to help you. This is true even when you are paying someone. First keep in mind that the vendors you hire are still people and should be treated with respect. If you are polite and respectful, then they will be more willing to do for you. And many times, vendors throw in nice little touches that are not part of the contract when you are a kind bride or groom.

To really avoid being the bridezilla, take a break from your wedding planning from time to time, but aim for a minimum of once a week. Take this time to reconnect with your fiance or some close friends without talking about wedding plans. If getting together with your fiance:

  • a fun dinner and a comedy
  • candle lit dinner and some quite cuddle time in front of the fire or tv
  • take a walk with your pets and/or each other
  • take a class together such as cooking, wine making, or other hobby you would enjoy together

are great ideas to help reconnect and reduce the stress we put ourselves under for that perfect day.

To destress with friends:

  • go for a girls spa day either at a local day spa or at your home for pedis and manis
  • rent chick flicks and have a PMS day (popcorn, movie, and soda)
  • drag out those board games you drug with you since childhood and play them
  • head out for a girls night out with some karaoke

or do whatever your group of friends loves to do together for fun. Either way you will become more relaxed and more likely to deal with others in a relaxed, respectful manner.

Finally, remember that you wedding day may be a special day, but there are things out of your control. When those things happen, and there is a good chance they will. Look at them with a bit of humor, laugh at the situation, and enjoy yourself. If you are relaxed and having fun, so will your guests, and that is the real recipe to a great wedding day, not perfection.
